The DIY Question
A snapped cable on a garage door is not a project for a Saturday afternoon, and this is the one honest limitation worth saying plainly: the door is under spring tension whether the cable holds or not, and a cable that lets go while someone is working on it can put a panel or a hand in the way of real weight. We've seen the YouTube fixes. Some of them are fine on paper. What they don't show is what happens when the drum on a 30-plus-year-old door has worn unevenly, which is common on doors built around here in the late 80s, or when the second cable - the one that isn't broken yet - is one pull away from going too. If you want to inspect the cable yourself to confirm that's the problem before you call anyone, that's reasonable: look for fraying at the bottom bracket or where the cable wraps the drum. Replacing it yourself is where we'd stop you.
What Can Go Wrong
The climate band out here runs severe on heat, and heat is hard on cable in a way that isn't obvious until it fails. Galvanized cable holds up fine against rust in a dry climate, but the lubricant that keeps the strands moving against each other and against the drum dries out faster in sustained high heat, and a dry cable frays instead of flexing. On doors built around 1988, which is the median for this stretch, that cable is old enough that the factory lubrication is long gone regardless of how it's been maintained. The other common failure is at the bottom bracket, where the cable takes the sharpest bend in the whole run - on extension-spring doors from this era, that bracket wasn't always installed with the strain relief that newer code calls for, so the cable wears a groove into the bracket edge over years and eventually cuts itself. Rust at the drum end shows up too, especially on the side of the door that gets less shade.
